Petrol prices near me: Where is the cheapest fuel where I live?

Petrol station stock levels have finally recovered from September's panic-buying crisis.

Last month saw scenes of long queues at forecourts across Wales and the rest of the UK as motorists desperately tried to get petrol and pumps ran dry after it was reported that the shortage of HGV drivers was affecting supply to a small number of filling stations.

Fuel sales went up 80% compared to normal levels as the crisis began with average stock levels sinking to a low of 15%.

However the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy said storage tanks at petrol stations in the UK were at an average of 45% full at the end of the day on Sunday, October 17 – the highest amount since May.

But while stock levels have finally returned to normal the cost of petrol has soared with prices nearly reaching the highest level ever recorded in the UK.

The average price of a litre of petrol on Monday was 139.46p, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy said. This is the most expensive since March 2013 and less than 3p per litre below the record figure of 142.17p set in April 2012.

Prices have risen by more than 26p per litre in the past 12 months, adding £14 to the cost of filling up a typical 55-litre family car.

The RAC, however, does not believe that the recent panic-buying crisis contributed to the rise in prices, instead attributing it to an increase in the cost of oil, a switch to E10 petrol, and the impact of VAT.

But how have the price increases affected the cost of petrol where you live? We checked the latest prices of unleaded as recorded on petrol station comparison website PetrolPrices.com.

Here are the cheapest and most expensive places to fill up within five miles of your local area.
