Petrol panic as huge queues line up at Scots pumps

Panic buying on petrol has seen filling stations across Ayrshire hit by long queues today.

Drivers have been faced with marathon waits to fill up at the pumps as motorists scramble to top up their tanks.

It follows BP, Tesco and Esso warning of a lack of fuel at some of their forecourts as a result of the HGV driver shortage.

The UK Government has appealed for calm and told drivers to "carry on as normal".

But across Ayrshire today, scenes of panic were evident with long queues forming at many petrol stations as drivers ensured they did not run out ahead of the weekend.

In Irvine, Kilmarnock and Ayr, long queues were reported at some of the busiest stations.

It comes as government ministers consider drafting in the army to drive petrol tankers across the UK.

But bosses at the Ayrshire Roads Alliance tonight sought to allay concerns about any impact of fuel shortages on frontline services.

A spokesperson said: "The Ayrshire Roads Alliance, in line with agreed emergency procedures, will work with the Ayrshire Civil Contingencies team in the event of fuel shortages to prioritise access to fuel for front line services.

"There is currently no indication that East or South Ayrshire will be facing imminent fuel shortages.

"It is important that our communities do not panic buy fuel, which could then lead to supply issues locally."
