Petrol crisis is tip of iceberg and worse is yet to come, says Lord Sugar

Huge queues at petrol stations while forecourts run dry is just the tip of the iceberg, and worse is yet to come - says Lord Alan Sugar.

Forecourts have run empty this week after major fuel companies and organisations said there were not enough HGV drivers to keep all stations fully supplied.

The UK has a shortage of around 100,000 drivers - a number that has doubled since Brexit and Covid.

There have been warnings from major retailers that empty supermarfket shelves seen in recent weeks, and shortage of food supplies in restaurants and schools - could get worse before Christmas.

A shortage of butchers could endanger Christmas meat stocks. A shortage of labour and drivers could also soon see huge numbers of animals slaughtered on their farms, industry experts said today.

Lord Alan Sugar said continuing concerns about fuel shortages are “just the tip of the iceberg”.

The Apprentice star told the PA news agency: “It goes back to Brexit. It goes back to the lies that we were told by (Michael) Gove and (Boris) Johnson to convince the British to vote for Brexit. It has been camouflaged a bit with Covid and now it is hitting home. It is as simple as that. It is hitting home.”

Speaking about the shortage of foreign HGV drivers, he said: “They may have gone home because they were worried about catching Covid or something like that, or they may have misunderstood the meaning of Brexit, they may have not wanted to sign up (to stay in the UK) at June.

“This is just the tip of the iceberg I am afraid. The full ramifications of that ridiculous move out of the European Union have yet to hit us.”
