Petrol bombs thrown at PSNI officers as bonfire removed in West Belfast

Petrol bombs and stones were thrown at police as a bonfire was removed in West Belfast yesterday.

PSNI officers were called to assist council staff as bonfire material was removed from a site at the edge of Colin Glen Forest Park on Saturday, July 27.

But officers came under attack and police have since arrested two people on suspicion of riotous behaviour and unlawful assembly.

Sgt McKinley said: "This behaviour is destructive to the local community and will not be tolerated."

In a statement on Sunday, the PSNI added : "Yesterday, West Belfast Police were asked for assistance by our colleagues in Belfast City Council, working at the request of the local community and political leaders to remove bonfire material that was being gathered on a site at the edge of Colinglen Forest Park.

"Our role was to prevent any disorder and make sure the Council staff were safe as they removed the material.

"During this operation there was some sporadic disorder with stone throwing and a couple of petrol bombs thrown at police. Police dealt with this swiftly and two people were arrested over riotous behaviour and unlawful assembly.

"Colin Glen Forest Park is a brilliant space and enjoyed by the local community and families. This behaviour cannot be allowed to take place anywhere let alone in a public space such as this. We will act and take action when people behave like this."
