Petrol and diesel prices soar to above €2 a litre as Ukraine war rages on

Several service stations were selling petrol and diesel at more than €2 a litre over the weekend as the war in Ukraine sent international oil prices spiralling.

Oil is priced at $118 (€107.8) a barrel on the international markets with the cost of a barrel now at $120 (€109.6), which is the equivalent of €2 a litre for petrol.

This is a massive increase compared to the situation two years ago when the pandemic led to oil being valued at €15 a barrel, and petrol selling for €1.12 a litre.

A breakdown of the cost of a litre of fuel at a service station here shows that around 60% is made up of tax and hard-pressed motorists are paying about €1 a litre in tax when they fill up.

A spokesman for AA Ireland said: “Paying €2 a litre has become a type of psychological line in the sand.

“It is a price threshold at which consumers begin to get concerned.

“For an average car, travelling 17,000km a year, you are paying approximately €800 more a year now than you were two years ago.”
