Petition to save bowling club on a roll as support grows

A petition to save Low Waters Bowling Club in Hamilton from closure is gathering momentum.

Online, the campaign has gathered more than 240 signatures in little over a week, with a further 250 signatures on a paper version of the petition.

Late last month, members of the Low Waters community joined forces with Hamilton South councillor, Josh Wilson, in a bid to keep their green from closing.

It came after news of outstanding debts led the bank to decide to sell both Low Waters Miners Welfare, which closed back in 2019, and the adjoining bowling green to the highest bidder.

If sold to a developer, it could spell the end of the institution which has been part of the Hamilton community since 1928.

Members of the club, however, are calling on whoever buys the site to maintain the green as a community asset.

Councillor Wilson, who started the petition, told Lanarkshire Live: "The campaign to Save our Green is picking up pace and the petition proves that there is a broad base of support to protect it from redevelopment.

"The bank must listen to the community and remove the green from the proposed sale. If they handed the green over to the bowling club before selling it to the highest bidder, they would still cover the outstanding debt and then some.

"We live in unprecedented times and the bank must step up to the plate and save this vital community asset."

Low Waters Bowling Club president, Fraser Lawson, added: "The Low Waters Bowling Club has been part of the community for almost 100 years and must be maintained for future generations.

"We will do everything in our power to ensure the club stays as part of the community and is not sold to a developer who has little regard for local facilities.”
