Petition launched for tram or underground system linking Leeds and Bradford

Campaigners are calling for the government to fund a West Yorkshire tram system or an underground network that links Leeds and Bradford.

A petition has been launched which says the government's reluctance to fund a West Yorkshire mass transit system 'should be of national concern'.

Leeds City Council and West Yorkshire Combined Authority spent almost 30 years and more than £70 million on developing supertram and trolleybus plans for Leeds, but they were both rejected by the Department for Transport.

Leeds is now the only major city in the UK without some form of mass transit system, but West Yorkshire Combined Authority is Map reveals three new transport lines in Leeds with city centre stations that could link the city with neighbouring areas.

The petition, which has only got 70 signatures so far, is titled: "Centrally fund a tram or underground for the Leeds-Bradford city region."

It states: "The West Yorkshire Urban Area is home to a population of approximately 2.3million people.

"If less wealthy countries are able to ensure their sizeable cities have mass transit systems, it should be of national concern that the UK, as the 9th wealthiest country in the world, is unwilling to do so.

"Any urban area within Europe of a similar size has either a tram, light rail, or underground network – some have two of the three. Examples include Turin, Prague, Vienna, Stockholm, Lyon, and our neighbours Manchester."

The government is currently running a consultation which asks people for their views on whether more light rail and other rapid transit systems are needed in the UK.

There are no plans for any light rail or tram systems in the Leeds Public Transport Programme, but the council says it 'will be reviewing the options'.

The petition is due to close on May 16.
