Petition launched for fencing at spot where 19-year-old fell to death

More tributes have been paid to a tragic teenager who fell to his death off a bridge - as a petition got underway to fence off dangerous spots on the roads.

Much-loved Daniel Fleming, 19, suffered fatal injuries at the scene on Oakdale Road in Wallasey, just after 7am on Monday.

His devastated family described him as "one of a kind" following his death.

Now, an online petition has been launched, calling for "fencing on all bridges and railway tracks."

Llanah Owens, who started the campaign, wrote: "Too many men and women are taking their own lives and there's not even half as much support out there as there could be.

"Personally, I think that if it was harder to get over, and they had more time to think they may realise there's another way.

"Who’s with me?"

Friend Maisie Oakes spoke of her shock after her pal's death, and described Daniel as "having a heart of gold."

She said: "The world is a cruel cruel place and I am completely devastated and heartbroken you felt like this.

"I wish you knew how much you were loved.

"You were the most selfless and beautiful person, inside and out, and always made sure you were there for me.

"You really did have a heart of gold.

"I’m so so sorry, I wish I done more but I hope you’re happier up there.

"You were too good for this world.

"Until we meet again, Dan, you can now rest in peace.

"Thoughts are with all the family.

"Sending you all my love at this hard time.

"Love you all."

Almost 3,000 people have signed the petition in the last 24 hours.

One man, who added his name to it, added: "I once made it to the other side of a bridge before being pulled back over by three elderly men.

"One in particular convinced me that my life would completely change."

In another message to his Facebook friends and family, Daniel's older brother, Tom, said: "Couldn’t appreciate it more what everyone has done for our Dan.

"He would of been so proud of everyone who has came together to do this for him.

"Thank you so much to all the lads and girls last night who came down for him to show you care and for the support.

"And to everyone in the pub, it honestly means so much to me and my family, love you all to bits, thank you.

"See you soon bro.

"I love you big fella."

A huge shrine of flowers has been left on the bridge where the tragedy happened.

The incident meant the Wallasey Tunnel was closed for several hours, and motorists were advised to use the Birkenhead Tunnel instead.

Merseyside Police and the city coroner are jointly investigating the tragedy.

The death has been referred for an inquest, but that will not open until later this week.

Daniel was treated at the scene and then taken to hospital with "serious injuries".

Sadly, he was soon pronounced dead.

Police say investigations are taking place and CCTV is being looked.

Witnesses and anyone who has any dashcam footage is urged to contact police.
