Petition launched calling for Dublin Airport to be renamed after Jim Gavin

A petition has been launched calling for Dublin Airport to be renamed after Jim Gavin.

The Clondalkin man announced his departure as Dublin manager following a trophy-laden spell that included completed the historic five-in-a-row at this year's All Ireland Football Final.

The Round Towers clubman secured a total of six All-Ireland titles as manager to go with the one he won as a player in 1995 and he has been hailed as one of the greatest GAA managers of all time.

Now a petition has been launched calling for the former Air Corps man to be immortalised by having the airport named after him.

The petition reads: "Jim Gavin is an Aviation Professional through and through from flying our Presidents safely around the world for 25 years with the Army Air corp, to retaining his Airbus licence with Aer Lingus and now a senior Director of our Irish Aviation Authority.

"What better association to link Dublin and Aviation (the leasing CAPITAL of the World) than to honour a man by naming our International Airport after him?

"Liverpool honoured their most famous son John Lennon with the distinction and I believe we should immortalise the Clare man with our same gratitude, respect and honour."

While the petition has only been signed by 26 people so far, the signatories were all unanimous in their praise for Gavin, whose father hails from Clare, say he "deserves" such an accolade.

Regardless of what honours are bestowed on him, Gavin leaves his post as a legend of the game, with Dublin GAA saying they will be "forever grateful" to him.

Chairman Sean Shanley said: "Dublin GAA will be forever grateful to Jim Gavin for his dedication, commitment and contribution as a player and, since 2003, leading the next generation of players at U21 and Senior level.

"I regret his departure but appreciate the huge sacrifices he has made over this period."

Dessie Farrell has been installed as the favourite to succeed the 48-year-old Gavin.

Farrell has guided Dublin to All-Ireland titles at minor and U-21 level and was in charge of Na Fianna this year.
