Petition for Captain Tom Moore to be knighted goes viral - here's how you can sign

This month 99-year-old war hero Captain Tom Moore has raised an extraordinary amount of money for the NHS.

By simply walking up and down his garden in Bedfordshire, he has inspired thousands of people to donate more than £28million to help the health service fight the coronavirus pandemic.

It started as a simple plan between him and his daughter. He promised to walk 100 lengths by his 100th birthday at the end of April, and aim to raise £1,000.

His story has gone around the world, and his initial four-figure target has been obliterated with more than 700,000 people donating.

There are now calls for him to be knighted.

The 99-year-old is Just Giving's biggest single fundraiser, and has said described being knighted by the Queen as the "greatest honour that any person could get".

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has already said he will consider calls for the WW2 hero to be knighted.

“Tom has captured the heart of the nation with his heroic efforts and has raised an incredible amount of money for hardworking NHS staff,” said a Downing Street spokesperson.

“From his military contributions to his support for NHS staff, Tom has demonstrated a lifetime of bravery and compassion.

“The Prime Minister will certainly be looking at ways to recognise Tom for his heroic efforts.”

The money raised will go to NHS Charities Together, an umbrella organisation that represents all NHS charities, and go towards well-being packs and recuperation rooms for NHS staff, as well as electronic devices that will allow hospitalised patients to stay in touch with family.

Originally from Keighley, West Yorkshire, Captain Tom saw service in India, Burma and Indonesia during the Second World War after being conscripted into the army at the age of 20.

Donations to his Just Giving page rocketed after appearances on BBC Breakfast and Good Morning Britain earlier this month, with Piers Morgan donating £10,000 to his cause.
