Petition calls for double yellow lines in Paisley street to deter dodgy parking

More than 40 residents are calling on council chiefs to put down double yellow lines in a Paisley street after raising concerns about dodgy parking.

A petition has been sent to the local authority by a Mr H Lister asking for action to be taken in Gartmore Road in the Ralston area of the town.

The document claims people living in Hawkhead Road are not using their own driveways and are instead parking on or near the junction with Gartmore Road.

Residents say this is creating a narrow entrance to the street which has led to many drivers almost crashing.

Meanwhile, the petition - signed by 43 people - states school kids crossing the road are being put in danger by poorly parked cars.

Gartmore Road is also used by a number of drivers as a shortcut to avoid traffic lights at the junction of Glasgow Road and Hawkhead Road, which residents say is compounding the issue and could get worse with new homes being developed in the area.

"Cars parked in Gartmore Road (mainly parking by residents living in Hawkhead Road not using their own driveways) near or on the corner are forcing motorists entering or exiting into a narrow slot which has led to cars just avoiding head-on collisions," the petition to the council reads.

"Motorists parking and using Gartmore Road ignore the access only signs.

"Schoolchildren crossing the road are being put in danger as parked cars block a driver's view.

"As we have a number of schools with pupils using Hawkhead Road this problem of child safety requires your urgent attention. A child's view when crossing Gartmore Road is restricted by parked cars.

"We the residents of Gartmore Road wish the council to double yellow line the entrance to our road up to the bollards and to consider a solution to stop motorists using our road as a shortcut to avoid the lights at the junction of Glasgow Road and Hawkhead Road."

The council's petitions board met to discuss the issue on Monday but, as Mr Lister did not show up, members postponed a decision until the next meeting to enable him to make his case.

Roads bosses have said the accident record for the area only shows one incident involving a slight injury in the past three years but officers have pledged to inspect the junction further.

Documents state if the problem is as severe as described, the council would promote a 'no waiting at any time' restriction.

Officers say implementing yellow lines would have to go through a consultation and the traffic order process could take around a year to complete before any lines could be painted.

The council has also said it would not be able to stop drivers using Gartmore Road as a shortcut and have suggested residents should contact police about whether people could be fined for ignoring the 'no vehicles except for access' restriction which is already in place.
