Petition calling on Glasgow to rename streets connected to slavery reaches over 3,500 signatures

A petition calling for Glasgow to rename the streets in the city which celebrate slavery figures has gained over 3,500 votes in the past 24 hours.

The petition advocates a change in names such as Glassford Street and Buchanan Street to take the Tobacco Lords 'off the pedestal they seemingly stand on and instead recognise other Scottish activists who are deserving of such esteem'.

And mentions how the city could follow in the footsteps of Spain, which renamed the streets in the country previously named after figures from Franco’s fascist regime.

Ciara Spratt, who set up the petition back in September, told Glasgow Live: "I remember learning about some of the slave trade history of Glasgow in primary school but thought that what we were told wasn’t really common knowledge.

"It was weird cause everyone knew the street names but not necessarily who those people were or what they did. Of course they were integral in Glasgow’s growth as a city but it seemed weird to me that they were set on a pedestal like that even now.

"Then, last year I was given an assignment, just to create a survey to understand some research techniques and I thought I should make it on something I thought was really important and some people might care about too, hoping it could actually gain some momentum and if not make a change, at least raise awareness."

It comes as the city is set to host a Black Lives Matter protest this weekend in solidarity with the protests that have erupted across the USA over the death of unarmed black man George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer.

As of this afternoon, over 3,600 people have signed the petition.
