Peterhead footballer caused hotel 'rammy' using 'homophobic slurs' and 'smashing covid screen'

A former St Mirren player has been accused of a boozy hotel rammy - using homophobic and racist slurs and smashing a bar screen.

Gary MacKenzie, who was called up for Scotland in 2011 and 2012 but never played a full game in dark blue, is said to have caused the disturbance at the Waterside Hotel in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire on Saturday night.

MacKenzie, who plays for Peterhead FC, also enjoyed spells at Rangers, Dundee and St Mirren among others in his 16 year playing career.

But the 34-year-old allegedly caused chaos at the bar over a row about being served more booze.

A worker at the bar told how MacKenzie made 'racist and homohobic' slurs after he was refused a drink, and smashed a newly installed covid screen before verbally abusing staff and punters.

The member of staff, who does not wish to be named, said: "He was calling a couple of English lads who were up for the weekend 'English c**ts', then he tried to pull me across the bar and called me a 'queer'.

"He was an utter imbicile."

The bar worker then went on to say that McKenzie tried to attack a night porter during the row, smashing the protective coronavirus screen.

The source said the footballer then 'went mental' and tried to 'square up' to a small man.

MacKenzie is 6ft 3' tall.

It's understood that hotel bosses have now complained to Peterhead FC over the defender's boozy antics, with the club 'instigating disciplinary procedures'.

A source said: "He came in the next day with a half hearted apology".

Peterhead were beaten 2-0 at home by local rivals Fraserburgh on Saturday.

Lanark-born MacKenzie moved to the north-east club this year after four years playing for St Mirren where he made nearly 60 appearances and scored six goals.

Peterhead Football Club said in a statement that one player was being disciplined.

It read: "Peterhead Football Club have been made aware of an incident at a local hotel where some of the playing staff were residing last weekend.

"Having carried out a full enquiry with the co-operation of the hotel the club have instigated disciplinary procedures with one player.

"We would like to thank the hotel for their co-operation in this matter.

"No further comment will be made."

The Waterside Hotel has been contacted for comment.

The alleged incident was not reported to Police Scotland.
