Peterborough United make stance clear to Nottingham Forest and Derby over striker

Peterborough United have told the host of clubs chasing Siriki Dembele they are under no pressure to sell their star forward.

Nottingham Forest, Derby, Newcastle, Celtic and Rangers have all been linked with the nine-goal forward who is considered one of the hottest properties in League One.

Fry says Rangers have already been to watch Dembele as well as Toon boss Steve Bruce amid speculation they are both lining up January bids.

But after offloading Ivan Toney to Brentford for a reported fee of close to £10m, the Posh director of football says there is no financial pressure to sell.

“Rangers have watched Siriki twice as have the Scottish national side,” Fry told Peterborough Today.

“Newcastle manager Steve Bruce watched him at Crewe when he didn’t play well.

“There will always be interest in players like Siriki, but we don’t have to sell him. We have him for another 18 months and we’d rather he stayed until the summer when we can reassess his situation.”

Peterborough had signed Dembele from Grimsby for around £200,000 in July 2018 and he has gone on to cement his position as one of the Football League's hottest talents.

Posh chairman Darragh McAnthony is a huge fan of the ex-Mariners wideman and says there is plenty of interest in their prized asset.

“Statistically Siriki is the best player in League One,” MacAnthony, a keen follower of football data, said: “He could do with more goals, but he’s a talent, a phenom who will put bums on seats for sure.

“One Premier League club wants him next summer and there are two clubs in the Championship as well as in Scotland chasing him.”
