Peterborough fire: Explosion fears at Hotpoint factory as huge plumes of smoke fill sky

A major fire has broken out at a Hotpoint warehouse in Peterborough with reports of 'explosions' heard as thick smoke clouds fill the air.

Witnesses have been sharing dramatic video footage and images online with one witness reporting hearing explosions "every few seconds".

Photographs show dark smoke rising behind houses as fire officials describe the incident as "serious" and warn people to keep their windows and doors shut.

Fire, ambulance and police teams are at the scene in Woodston amid reports the fire - said to be producing 'toxic smoke' - can be seen from "miles away".

Around two dozen firefighters and eight fire engines are currently tackling the blaze, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said.

James Norris who lives close by told Mirror Online "we could (see) such a massive big cloud of smoke," adding "you could see trailers on fire and loud bangs coming from there."

A Twitter user said: "Driving through #Peterborough hear a loud bang and now (standing next) to a field as it’s so smoky. Anyone know what’s going on."

Another added: "Huge flume of black smoke over #Peterborough as seen from Castor."

And another wrote: "Massive fire in Peterborough - could hear the bangs as if there’s explosions."

Police have asked people to keep the area clear for emergency services amid warnings roads could be closed.

A Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue spokeswoman told Cambridgeshire Live: "It’s big incident at Hotpoint warehouse, Shrewsbury Avenue in Peterborough.

"We’ve got lots of fire engines there and it is something serious.

"That’s all we know, for now."

The fire service has tweeted: "A number of crews are dealing with a large fire on Shrewsbury Avenue, Peterborough."

They said the fire involves a number of trailer units and warned people to avoid the area.

A spokeswoman said fire services were called at 6.57pm.

There are no initial reports of any injuries.

One eyewitness said: "Hoping everyone is safe at the #hotpoint factory in #Peterborough frightening scenes even from our house in #hampton."

Another wrote to the fire service saying: "Massive billowing smoke and explosions, supposedly Hotpoint in Peterborough up in flames.

"Stay safe everyone & thank you so much for the work you do."

One woman said: "Something pretty awful is happening in Peterborough right now."

"It's apparently Hotpoint. I live in Hempstead and it looks and sounds awful," another witness added.

"I hope nobody is trapped inside. I hope the emergency services are also all safe."

John Peach, 60, a former city councillor and mayor of Peterborough, and the former deputy chairman of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough fire authority said he saw the managing director trying to get in.

He told Cambridgeshire Live: "He was getting quite upset. He’s asked can I get in, and they’ve told him no."

He added: "I was at Belsize Avenue and it was the far side of the sight, and that’s where it was. It sounded like fuel tanks going off."

Peterborough Police tweeted: "We are currently on scene assisting Fire and Ambulance on Celta Road, Woodston at a large fire.

"Please assist us by keeping the area clear so our vehicles can get where they need to.

"There may be road closures as well, so please check for details."

Mirror Online has contacted Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service for further comment.
