Peter Walton explains why Antoine Griezmann red card against Liverpool was correct

Former Premier League referee Peter Walton has backed the decision to send off Antoine Griezmann during Atletico Madrid's Champions League clash against Liverpool.

The French forward received a straight red card in 52nd minute after his studs-up challenge connected with Robert Firmino’s face.

Griezmann's dismissal left Diego Simeone’s side with 10 men with the score tantalisingly locked at 2-2 after Mohamed Salah and Naby Keita’s strikes were cancelled out by Griezmann's brace in a frenetic first half.

Walton concurred with the referee’s decision to dismiss the France striker.

"The pictures we’re seeing the foot is clearly high," he said whilst speaking on BT Sport.

"Yes, Firmino is ducking down slightly but unfortunately for Griezmann he’s gone through with a straight leg, there’s force there and it is correct, it’s serious foul play and he should be sent off for this."

Former Liverpool midfielder Steve McManaman agreed the 30-year-old had to go but felt some sympathy for the Frenchman.

He added: "Wow, I can’t believe it as well. He was unlucky Griezmann it came over his head and he’s just dangled a foot at it and Firmino bends down to get control of it himself.

"You can see from the reaction what everyone thinks of it. It’s really high."
