Peter Shilton's emotional wife says she had to 'win him back' after gambling addiction
Peter Shilton's wife Steph got emotional during an appearance on This Morning as the football legend opened up about his devastating gambling addiction.
The former England goalkeeper, 71, is releasing a new book about how he overcame his 45-year battle and how his beloved wife helped him get through.
Steph started tearing up as she admitted it was "one of the greatest moments of my life" when her husband packed it all in.
Speaking to presenters Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield, Steph explained his new book - Saved: Overcoming a 45-Year Gambling Addiction - was written in a "comforting" way, in a bid to help loved ones of those battling addiction.
"For me that's why I'm so passionate about what we decided to do with the book," she explained.
Steph continued: "I know how comforting that would have been for me. As a loved one, you start to have this secret life as well as it's not something you can talk to someone openly about.
"It was a terrific moment when Pete quit. It was one of the greatest moments of my life."
Holly added: "You got him back," as Steph agreed: "I'd won."
Elsewhere on the show, Holly broke down in tears after Kate Garraway revealed she is "shattered all the time".
Good Morning Britain star Kate, 54, has been caring for her poorly husband Derek Draper since he returned home from battling Covid in hospital.
The TV star has been keeping everything together for the sake of her beloved husband and their two kids - Darcey, 15, and William, 12 - but it has also been a challenging time for her.
When asked by Holly how she feels as she is taking a lot on all at once, Kate admitted she "she's probably not on track" and is "shattered all the time".
In response, Phillip told her: "You are a remarkable woman, thank you so much for talking to us. Lots of love to you and your family."
As he spoke to Kate, emotions started to run high as Holly went silent and started sobbing.
"Sorry Kate," Holly whispered.
Kate then noticed Holly was upset, telling her: "Please don't cry, I don't want to make everybody miserable."
"You've done so well," Holly tearfully added.
"Sorry Holly, I want to hug you. You'll make me cry now," Kate reassured her.
Kate is nominated for a National Television Award tonight for her ITV documentary Finding Derek, which followed her husband's life since he left hospital after battling Covid.
Holly and Phil also hope to win an award for their daytime show.
