Peter Schmeichel urges Manchester United to recall Nemanja Matic to first-team

Peter Schmeichel has urged Manchester United to recall Nemanja Matic back to first-team duty following their weekend draw against Sheffield United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side dropped points again over the weekend as they shipped three goals against the Premier League newcomers.

The home side strolled into a two goal lead in the match as United struggled for possession and were unable to match the physical challenge of Sheffield United's midfield.

In the absence of Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba the United manager opted for Andreas Pereira and Fred in the middle of the park, however the Brazilian pair struggled to impose themselves on the game.

After the match Schmeichel criticised the lack of creativity in midfield and urged Solskjaer to bring Serbia international Matic back into the starting line up.

"They needed a player like Matic today, just to sit in that defensive midfield role and just calm things down," Schmeichel told Premier League productions.

"He’s been criticised for being slow and playing the ball backwards too many times, but sometimes they needed that in this game.

"I like Fred, but he definitely needs somebody strong, somebody that can control him.

"You want to talk about where Man United are in this evolving period, but just the fact that Scott McTominay is not there is a problem."
