Peter Schmeichel urges Manchester United to keep Cristiano Ronaldo amid interview controversy

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel wants Cristiano Ronaldo to stay at the club, despite his controversial interview with Piers Morgan.

The 37-year-old striker slammed his manager Erik ten Hag, the Glazer family and several of his former teammates in an explosive TV interview, which is set to be released on Wednesday and Thursday. Ronaldo, who is currently preparing for the World Cup with Portugal, claimed that the club had 'betrayed' him.

Ronaldo has been heavily criticised since snippets of the interview were shared on social media, with the majority of people backing Ten Hag and the club for how they have dealt with the former Real Madrid man this term.

However, club legend Schmeichel has taken a difference stance on the matter and has suggested that he wants the Portuguese international to remain at Old Trafford.

Schmeichel, who won five Premier League titles with the Reds, told BBC Radio 5 Live: "I believe in fairy tales. I’m a big big fan of Ronaldo. I’ve always been a big fan of him… And I’m a big fan of Manchester United having the best players in the world.

"I hope there will be an opportunity where his people and Manchester United can sit down, and talk this through, and find a solution.

"I really want Cristiano to stay a Manchester United player."

Ronaldo has endured a difficult campaign so far this term, with the 37-year-old registering just three goals in 16 appearances in all competitions. The striker is set to play an important role for Fernando Santos' side at the upcoming World Cup in Qatar, with Bruno Fernandes also included in the 26-man squad.
