Peter Schmeichel tells Manchester United what to do after David de Gea deal

Peter Schmeichel has urged Manchester United to build on from David de Gea's new deal.

De Gea's future has been heavily discussed this summer amid his current contract running out next June but in the last month there has been an expectation that the Spaniard will come to new terms.

That belief has taken on a new life with Schmeichel now insisting that a deal is done for the 28-year-old to remain at Old Trafford for the long haul.

The MEN understands that the two parties have agreed on a new six-year contract which is anticipated to be confirmed shortly.

The new deal is said to be worth around £375K a week, with United having fought off the advances of Paris Saint-Germain this summer, with the Ligue 1 outfit having made an offer for the goalkeeper.

But as Schmeichel confirms, the talented shot-stopper is set to provide a major boost for United as they look to build upon an impressive 4-0 win over Chelsea in their opening match of the 2019/20 Premier League season.

"David was a great signal that we start off with arguably our best performer over the last five years," Schmeichel told Mirror Sport.

"We have tied him down, he is staying and now we move on and build on that."

Schmeichel added that he is also happy with the transfer business the club has done to replace the likes of Antonio Valencia and Ander Herrera.

"We had a few guys who have been instrumental like Antonio Valencia and Ander Herrera who have left with their contracts running out," Schmeichel added.

"They have had to be replaced by Manchester United youth which is a very position thing. Wan-Bissaka has come in and Daniel James who are good exciting young British players."
