Premier League-winning goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel believes that the interim manager who comes in at Manchester United must put pressure on the players, focusing on shoring up the defence and named Steve Bruce as a "fantastic" option.
The Reds are searching for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's replacement after the Norwegian was sacked on Sunday but they will wait to appoint a permanent successor following an interim period until the end of the season.
Michael Carrick is in temporary charge and got off to a winning start, beating Villarreal to secure Champions League knockout qualification.
Steve Bruce has been out of work since he was sacked following the Newcastle United takeover by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund which saw Mike Ashley's reign come to an end at St James' Park.
Ernesto Valverde is a name mooted with the position until the end of the season and Manchester United have held talks with the La Liga winning manager over the possibility of taking over at Old Trafford.
Meanwhile, Manchester Evening News understands Ralf Rangnick is also a target for the interim manager's position, should their pursuit of Mauricio Pochettino be unsuccessful.
But Schmeichel believes Bruce, who made 390 appearances for United in a career spanning nine years at the Theatre of Dreams where he won three Premier League titles and FA Cup trophies, would be a good choice.
"If it's interim, get someone who knows the club, whose known by the club as well, get someone like Steve Bruce that would be fantastic, get the next guy in now and start working from now," Schmeichel said speaking on CBS Sports' coverage of the Champions League.
"Talking as a principle, I would love to have somebody who comes in now and puts the pressure on the players, a new voice, get them out there performing without making massive changes in style, or system.
"Something that the next one, the real one [permanent manager], the one they really want has come in and then start over again.
"First of all, I would speak to the players about what it means to play for Manchester United [if he was in charge], how privileged they are then I'd work on the defending, not conceding goals. I would not be a defensive manager but you cannot concede the amount of goals that we are conceding so far.
"Anyone that goes in there would start with that, you've got to take small steps, you cannot just jump in and say 'we're playing pressing game and everyone's got to press from... [the front]'.
"You've got to start somewhere and the first thing you need to give confidence in the team that if I take this chance it's not going to end a goal at the other end and at the moment that's happening."
