Peter Schmeichel makes big claim about legendary Manchester United team and Man City

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has outlined the difference between his treble winning side of 1999 and the Man City team who are aiming for an unprecedented quadruple in 2019.

Schmeichel, who finished his career with the blue side of Manchester, was a key part of Sir Alex Ferguson's Man United side that memorably defeated Bayern Munich in the European Cup final to make history.

Guardiola's side are looking to clinch the quadruple this season, an achievement that would eclipse United's famous treble on its 20th anniversary.

And the Dane believes there is a key difference in quality between that United side and Guardiola's current team.

Speaking to beIN Sport ahead of City's Champions League game at Spurs, he explained: "I think the difference is that the team of 1999 were largely built within the club.

"That's not how football works these days. Today the biggest clubs in the world, they buy the players they need for whatever way they think they have to play.

"Just looking at the teams tonight, he's put out an interesting team.

"But when you look at the bench all of the players are equally as good.

"I don't think any team 20 years back could muster that sort of bench. That's the big difference in spending power and quality of the players that are there."
