Peter Schmeichel identifies Manchester United transfer mistake

Peter Schmeichel believes Manchester United made a mistake when they allowed Jonny Evans to leave the club for West Brom in 2015.

The Northern Ireland international was allowed to leave the club five years ago after he had fallen out of favour with former United manager Louis van Gaal.

Evans, who is the second most decorated player in Northern Irish football history, impressed upon his Old Trafford exit and quickly established himself as a key figure for West Brom.

The 32-year-old was then snapped up by Leicester following West Brom's relegation from the Premier League two years ago and has again become a key figure in their backline.

Evans has played a pivotal role in Leicester's bid for Champions League football this season and Schmeichel believes he is unfortunate not to still be playing for United.

The former United shot-stopper hailed Evans for his leadership and 'perfect' mentality as one of the top-flights leading central defenders.

"I’m also watching Leicester and even though I love the fact that he is playing in the same team as my son, I can’t understand why Man Utd sold a quality player like Jonny Evans," Schmeichel tweeted on Saturday.

"Watching Evans play every game, I don’t see many better in the Premier League. Great defender, fantastic leadership and perfect mentality!!"
