Peter Schmeichel applauds Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's reign as Manchester United manager

Manchester United legend, and former teammate of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Peter Schmeichel, has given his thoughts on the club's decision to sack the Norwegian.

The club officially announced their decision to part ways on Sunday, after three years in charge, following a run of dismal performances.

The Manchester Evening News understands club executives decided that they must act now in the wake of the humiliating 4-1 defeat against Watford.

After making a strong start to life as United manager, performances and results began to dwindle within the last few months.

United lost five of their final seven Premier League games under Solskjaer, who has been dismissed from the club whilst sitting in seventh place in the Premier League.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Schmeichel reacted to the news and applauded his former teammate for his work in charge.

He said: "It's a sad day. It's the fourth time now we've had to sack a manager and clearly there's something not going right at the club.

"I personally feel Ole has done a really good job. What he took he over was not ideal and he's had to work with a very big squad - it's difficult for a manager to do that.

"I think he's done fantastic behind the scene's. I hope Ole will bounce back."

Michael Carrick will be in charge as soon as Tuesday's Champions League group game at Villarreal, as the club search for Solskjaer's permanent replacement.

Brendan Rodgers, Erik ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino have all been linked to the job, while it remains to be seen who United will prioritise.

Schmeichel has stated what he'd like to see in United's next long-term manager.

He said: "I want Manchester United to get back to being a winning club. I want somebody who can compete for the Champions League every year.

"Somebody who can build the club up - who will be here for the long-term and is willing to work with the academy.

"We need that Manchester United DNA back into the team."
