'Peter Sawkins: Edinburgh students start petition to have Uni building named after Bake Off champ

After he became the first Scot to ever win Bake Off on Tuesday, Edinburgh University students have called for the city to honour its star baker.

A petition has been launched calling on university bosses to rename a building after Peter Sawkins, who has returned to complete his studies in the city after winning The Great British Bake Off.

The organisers say that with "everything going on in the world at the moment", Peter's win has "brought the nation together".

The petition's organiser, Cameron Barford, wrote: "As much as we wanted him to win and dared to dream, the excitement when his name was announced as winner was unrivaled.

"Tears of joy and a feeling of joy. This is why we believe it is only right that Peter gets recognised for this.

"At Edinburgh University buildings are named after influential people from the university. We see no one as influential as the first Scottish winner and youngest ever winner of Bake Off."

Cameron said it was an "honour" to attend the same university at Peter, who at 20 is the youngest ever baker to be crowned winner of the TV series.

"Forget David Hume Tower, we want Peter Sawkins Showstopper," the petition reads.

After he won the competition, Peter revealed he had watched the final with his flatmates in Edinburgh.

He said: “I watched the final with my flatmates. I made something similar to the choux buns in the Showstopper, so it did have an element of the bake in it!

“For lockdown reasons, it couldn’t exactly be a party, but it was great to celebrate with my flatmates and have a few drinks.”
