Peter Sawkins Bake Off: Edinburgh student celebrated big win by baking chocolate cake for flatmates

It's fair to say most of Edinburgh were over the moon on Tuesday night when local man Peter Sawkins was crowned The Great British Bake Off 2020 winner.

Wowing the judges in the final round with his showstopping bubble cake, the Edinburgh University student became the youngest ever winner, as well as the first Scottish Bake Off champion.

Speaking about the competition, the 20-year-old said it had "changed his life". But, while other GBBO winners have signed TV deals and authored successful cookbooks, Peter revealed that he was planning on returning to his studies.

And, the humble winner has now told how he celebrated his enormous achievement in the perfect lockdown-style that we can all relate to- and, of course, it involved cake.

As if everyone didn't already love him enough, Peter made all his flatmates a delicious chocolate cake to celebrate the broadcast of the finale.

Despite knowing he was the winner since filming finished in August, the student has had to keep it under wraps until the show was aired.

Speaking to BBC radio's Good Morning Scotland programme, he said: "There is something very nice that I can finally stop keeping the secret and share it with friends and family.

"It's an absolute dream - I was really pleased with how I managed to step through all the challenges.

"I feel in a really privileged position because of course there will be some opportunities that arise from this, and it would be amazing to try and explore them, but at the same time I am going to keep on going with my degree, so I'm in a nice position."

Due to coronavirus restrictions, all contestants were required to self-isolate for nine days and take three Covid-19 tests ahead of filming for the show.

They were also required to quarantine together at a hotel for two weeks before production started and stayed for six weeks in a bubble until filming ended
