Peter Robinson, author of the Inspector Banks novels, dies

British-born Canadian crime writer Peter Robinson died on October 4, 2022. Robinson was 72.

The author passed away suddenly after a brief illness, his publisher Hodder & Stoughton said on social media recently. Sharing the news of his death, Hodder & Stoughton tweeted: "We are very sad to announce the death of much-loved crime writer Peter Robinson and pass our deepest condolences to his family and friends."

Robinson was born on March 17, 1950 in England. He later moved to Canada in 1974 after he pursued a degree in English Literature at the University of Leeds. And he lived in Toronto, Canada with his wife Sheila Halladay.

Roughly 35 years ago, Robinson's first book featuring Inspector Banks was published. Over the years he wrote novels, thrillers, short stories, etc. But he is best-known for his Inspector Banks novels, which were also adapted into a TV series. During this lifetime, roughly 8.75m copies of his books were sold and they are also translated into 19 languages.

Reacting to the news of his sudden death, crime writer Ian Rankin tweeted, "Hellish news about my dear friend Peter Robinson. Spent many a wonderful evening in the company of him and his partner Sheila."

Crime writer Val McDermid said, "Sad to hear of the death of @Inspector_Banks . We were both first published in 1987, and our paths often crossed, (usually accompanied by beer) in Canada and his beloved Yorkshire. Condolences to Sheila."

Peter Robinson's famous Inspector Banks series has 27 book so far. The 28th book in the series 'Standing in the Shadows', is expected to be published in 2023.
