Peter O'Mahony red card: Social media reacts as Ireland reduced to 14 men against Wales

Ireland's task of beating Wales was made tougher after Peter O'Mahony was sent off this afternoon.

The Munster man was dismissed for a high challenge on Tomas Francis in the 14th minute.

Flanker O’Mahony powered in and caught Francis in the head with an elbow, prompting referee Wayne Barnes to consult the television match official before producing a red card.

The decision led to plenty of debate on social media, but the majority of people feel that the referee made the right call by sending the Irishman off.

One person said: "Don’t think the ref had any option but to issue a red there for Peter O'Mahony."

Another commented: "Peter O’Mahony doesn’t strike me as a dirty player, but when you smash your shoulder into an opponent’s face, you can’t complain when you get sent off."

Someone else tweeted: Definite red, going to be a long afternoon for @IrishRugby."

One other Twitter user posted: "I feel so bloody sorry for Peter O'Mahony. Plays on the edge always but he's fair, not dirty. These things happen."
