Peter O'Mahony disciplinary hearing to take place this afternoon following red card against Wales

Peter O'Mahony will face a disciplinary hearing by video conference this afternoon after seeing red in Cardiff on Sunday.

O'Mahony, 31, was sent off by referee Wayne Barnes in the 13th minute of Ireland's Six Nations opener against Wales in the Principality Stadium.

Although the incident at a ruck was initially deemed a fair tackle by Barnes, his TMO Tom Foley drew attention to it and after watching the replay, Barnes had no hesitation in dismissing the Munster skipper to the stands.

O'Mahony was seen to hit Welsh prop Tomas Francis high as he attempted a clearout, and did without wrapping his arms in the tackle.

A Six Nations statement this morning confirmed that the Corkman was sent off for "an infringement of Law 9.20 (a) & (b) - Dangerous play in a ruck or maul.

"A player must not charge into a ruck or maul. Charging includes any contact made without binding onto another player in the ruck or maul.

"A player must not make contact with an opponent above the line of the shoulders."

O'Mahony is expected to pick up a two or three week suspension for the incident, ruling him out of Sunday's championship encounter against France and, after a down weekend, also out of the trip to Rome to face Italy.
