Peter O'Mahony banned for Ireland's next three games after 'reckless' challenge on Wales prop Tomas Francis

Ireland back-rower Peter O'Mahony has been banned for three matches after his 'reckless' red card challenge on Wales prop Tomas Francis.

O'Mahony will miss Ireland's Six Nations fixtures with France on Sunday, as well as their home clash with Italy on February 27 and the game in Scotland on March 14.

Six Nations officials say he will be available for selection again from March 15, meaning he will be able to feature in Ireland's finale against England if selected.

O'Mahnoy's suspension came after a Six Nations disciplinary hearing where he admitted dangerous play and accepted referee Wayne Barnes was right to send him off against Wales.

In O'Mahony's absence Ireland, down to 14 men for most of the game, lost 21-16 at the Principality Stadium.

The disciplinary bosses decreed O'Mahony's actions merited a six-week punishment entry point, but they halved the ban after taking into account the Munster man's record and his conduct in the hearing.

They say he has to miss three 'meaningful matches', which rules O'Mahony out of Ireland's next three fixtures.

The hearing took place by video conference and officials studied footage of O'Mahony colliding with Francis.

In publishing their verdict, the commission said his actions in charging into the ruck and without binding led to 'reckless contact with the head of the Wales No3.'

O'Mahony accepted he had been wrong and that was taken into account as part of the mitigation.
