Peter Lovenkrands names his Rangers player of the year as Kris Boyd jokes he risks former team-mate's ire

Ex-Rangers striker Peter Lovenkrands has picked his Ibrox player of the year - and it's not former team-mate Allan McGregor.

The retired Danish frontman, also a former coach at Auchenhowie, reckons James Tavernier is the frontrunner for the prize for his powerful displays from right-back.

Lovenkrands also singled out keeper McGregor and midfielder Glen Kamara for praise but he reckons the skipper is in the clear having notched 11 goals and nine assists in 27 league games.

Speaking on Sky Sports' Scottish Football Podcast, he said: "It's tough, you know. There have been so many outstanding performances.

"Allan McGregor, for me, is definitely going to be one of them for how he organises from the back but also the clean sheets he's keeping.

"When he's called upon he comes up with the big moments and the big saves.

"Glen Kamara has been outstanding as well and he's one of the unsung heroes for me. He is so important to the team.

"Most times he goes unnoticed but he, for me has been fantastic. James Tavernier, as well, he's been outstanding.

"Right now, I'd probably go with James Tavernier, I would say."

That prompted Kris Boyd to chuckle: "Oh, your best mate Greegsy wouldn't be happy with that!"
