Fashion photographer Peter Lindbergh has died aged 74, leaving behind a catalogue of seminal images.
Lindbergh was renowned for his intimate and unpolished portraits of models and actors, with everyone from Kate Moss and Gigi Hadid to Ethan Hawke and Charlotte Rampling having posed for him in the space of his 40-year-long career.
But the German photographer was perhaps best known for his iconic Vogue covers, such as the January 1990 issue of British Vogue, which featured supermodels Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlingtonand Tatjana Patitz.
Lindbergh is also famed for having been chosen by American Vogue editor Anna Wintour to shoot her debut cover for the publication in November 1988.
The most recent of Lindbergh’s Vogue covers came out just last month. He was selected by the Duchess of Sussex to photograph the September issue of British Vogue, for which he captured 15 trailblazers, including Jane Fonda and Jacinda Arden, prime minister of New Zealand.
At the time, Lindbergh explained that the word "natural" was the key message behind the shoot, telling British Vogue: “I hate retouching, I hate make-up”.
“The number of beautiful women who have asked me to lengthen their legs or move their eyes further apart… you would not believe," he added. "It’s a culture of madness.”
