Peter Lawwell explains why Celtic have offered Neil Lennon the manager's role

Peter Lawwell has paid a warm tribute to Neil Lennon after the Irishman appeared to accept the Celtic job on a permanent basis.

The Parkhead supremo hailed the 47-year-old who guided the Hoops to a historic treble Treble after the thrilling 2-1 Scottish Cup Final win over Hearts.

Celtic wasted no time in confirming their former star as the man to take the club forward in the aftermath of the win at Hampden.

Lennon answered Celtic's SOS back in February when Brendan Rodgers upped sticks by making the shock move to Leicester City.

A host of box-office names such as Jose Mourinho, Rafa Benitez and Andre Villas-Boas were all linked with the vacancy but it's the former boss who has landed it for keeps.

Lawwell believes the club could not be in better hands as Celtic eye continue their quest to secure 10-in-a-row.

He said: "Neil stepped up to the plate when we needed him.

"He’s a true Celtic man who knows the club and the city.

"He’s a winner with a fantastic eye for a player. I’m delighted to announce he’s been offered the job.”

Celtic face a summer of change with 10 players set for the exit door and Champions League qualifiers beginning at the start of July.

Lennon admits it's a thrill to once again be back in the Parkhead hotseat for good after his previous four-year spell in the dugout between 2010-14.

He said: "It’s a privilege. It was my privilege to manage the club once but to do it a second time it feels like I’ve gone full circle.

"It was always an objective. I left the club on good terms the last time and nothing has changed.

"It’s been a rollercoaster couple of months. Difficult, but I hope I bring more success to the club going forward.

"It’s already begun really. There’s going to be changes to the personal obviously but I don’t want to change too much because it’s been a really good transition from Brendan to myself.

"I’ve got to pay tribute to him because he did fantastic things for the club as well."
