Peter Lawwell disputes Celtic board 'agenda' as he hits back at contempt for fans claim

Peter Lawwell has dismissed claims the Celtic board have an ulterior 'agenda' and are holding fans in contempt.

The Parkhead chief executive was speaking at the club's AGM on Monday morning as he took part in a fan Q&A.

Lawwell understands the supporters' frustrations, but insists the criticism of the board is wide of the mark and slightly "over the top".

He said: "I understand frustration, it’s been a difficult run over eight weeks

"I’m a Celtic supporter, I get it, we understand it.

"The social media world, accusations that the board is holding fans in contempt, it can get a wee bit OTT.

"The support over the summer, they were nothing short of remarkable.

"We have no agenda or motive.

"We haven’t given up on the league, there are circumstances that have put us in the position. We will do all we can to win the league."

Lawwell responded to claims Celtic are 'sleeping at the wheel' as they face an uphill battle to secure Ten in a Row with Rangers' comfortable lead at the Premiership summit.

But the Hoops chief insists that's not the case as the club have invested in the squad significantly over the last year or so.

He added: "That’s not the case, next week we could win the quadruple treble .

"We strengthened the squad in the summer we spent, as a club over the last 14 months, £35million.

"We’ve strengthened and kept best our players - that’s not complacency.

"We have a manager with a track record and who delivers."
