Peter King says Kyle Allen will be the Day 1 starting QB for Redskins

It’s tough to predict what is going to happen by the time the start of the 2020 NFL season rolls around — or at least when we expect the start of the season will come. The coronavirus pandemic has thrown our entire future into question, with uncertainty for coming events the only certainty we have. For the NFL, there are still hopes that the regular season and the preluding training camp goes on as normal, but doubt is everpresent.

For the Washington Redskins, navigating this time could mean a major change in their depth chart and starting lineup, as they look to find the players that are best suited to take the field, regardless of how much practice they’ve gotten in this offseason.

For second-year QB Dwayne Haskins, this could potentially see him lose his starting spot, according to NBC Sports Peter King.

“I believe the way that this year is moving that it’s pretty likely that opening day, at quarterback for Washington, is not going to be Dwayne Haskins,” King said, via NBC Sports Washington.

Instead, King thinks it could be Kyle Allen who takes the first snaps under center for the Redskins, as he has the most familiarity with the offense and the new coaching staff in Washington, having played in that system last year with the Carolina Panthers. While he was brought in to compete for the starting spot, many believed hat Haskins would be able to beat him out in training camp. However, if there is no training camp, Allen may prove to be the safer play.

“If you’re Ron Rivera, you want a guy who you know can walk in Day 1,” King said. “If you have to face the New York Giants on September 13, you want a guy who knows everything about Scott Turner’s offense and who’s well-versed in everything he’s going to have to do.”

This doesn’t mean that Haskins can’t eventually win that starting job back, but for Week 1 at least, it could be Allen under center for Washington.
