Peter King floats idea Redskins land Derek Carr in hypothetical trade

The NFL’s silly season is fully underway with the draft on approach.

The Washington Redskins are a prominent part of the conversation again thanks to the need under center at quarterback. Case Keenum is in town, but the Redskins likely wouldn’t mind if a first-round passer fell in their laps.

This has also opened up the Redskins to plenty of trade speculation.

Pro Football Talk’s Peter King, for example, wondered what would happen if the Oakland Raiders trade up to No. 1 in a deal with the Arizona Cardinals so they could select Kyler Murray — before shipping Derek Carr to Washington:

“Theoretically, suppose the Raiders trade the fourth and 27th picks in round one this year, plus one of their two first-rounders next year, to deal up to Arizona’s pick, and the Raiders take Murray. Then suppose they could recoup one of those first-round picks by trading quarterback Derek Carr to Miami or Washington or the Giants for a 2020 first-rounder.”

This is all in good fun of course, but one of the simple problems would be money. Instead of paying a rookie, the Redskins would have to give Carr the bulk of his five-year deal worth $125 million signed in 2017 that pays him north of $20 million in cap hit in each of the next three seasons.

Otherwise, getting a 28-year-old passer who completed 68.9 percent of his attempts last year with 4,000-plus yards and 19 touchdowns wouldn’t be such a bad result.

This isn’t a widespread idea by any means, but it does speak to how silly the moves NFL teams make can be at times. As is stands now, money is the biggest problem with such an idea.
