What to do with the second pick in the 2020 NFL draft continues to be a big question facing the Washington Redskins.
This is perhaps even more so the case in the wake of Quinton Dunbar asking for his trade or release, muddying the picture at an already shaky position.
Peter King, speaking with NBC Sports recently, made the case for the Redskins trading down once — or even twice — in the opening round:
“I believe that Washington now could totally rebuild its team if it’s willing to do two things: pass on a quarterback…and pass on Chase Young. They could trade back twice and get up to three additional first-round picks by trading down. Could they do that? Could they say, ‘hey listen, we want to get great volume over the next two drafts or do we want a guy who’s got a chance to be Lawrence Taylor?’ Washington has a franchise-defining decision ahead of it…”
It’s the quality vs. quantity debate, right? If the Redskins are comfortable with Montez Sweat and Ryan Kerrigan alongside an already-stout front seven, perhaps moving down and gaining assets makes sense.
If the Redskins feel Chase Young is a can’t-miss prospect at any cost, he’s obviously the pick.
It’s hard not to think about the potential here though. The Redskins have an (apparently growing) list of problems to tackle and increasing the number of quality assets available to tackle those issues would make sense.
The Dunbar issue only makes the situation more perplexing.
