Peter Kenyon linked with backroom role at Newcastle after takeover attempt

Former Manchester United and Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon is being touted for a similar role at Newcastle United, according to reports.

Alan Nixon of the Sun claims the Magpies are lining up the former Red Devils man for the vacant role at St. James' Park.

Kenyon had a number of attempts to buy Newcastle United rebuffed, before the Saudi led takeover beat him to the post last year.

Nixon claims that the appointment of the 68-year-old would not impact an approach for Brighton technical director Dan Ashworth, with the latter of the two being lined up for a different role.

The former West Bromwich Albion director has been touted for a director of football type role at St. James' Park, with talks having taken place between the two parties.

Ashworth, formerly of the FA, has been a key figure at the Seagulls, signing Neal Maupay, Tariq Lamptey, Leandro Trossard and Marc Cucurella during his time at the AMEX Stadium.

Newcastle's move to appoint a chief executive and technical director, or director of football, has been put on the backburner until the end of the January transfer window with the new owners focussing on improving the squad.
