Peter Kay to make history with monthly residency at the O2 as part of huge comeback tour

Peter Kay is doing a monthly residency at the O2 as part of his huge comeback tour.

The comedian, 49, will make history as the first artist to do a monthly residency at the London arena, with Zoe Ball making the announcement live as Peter joined her on her Breakfast show on Radio 2 today.

Peter will be performing at the venue each month for a year, with his first date being Friday 16th December and will go on to perform 21st January, 18th February, 22nd March and 22nd April. It will run each month until Saturday 18th November 2023.

The comic, who is touring for the first time in 12 years, said on the show: "I'm doing the O2 once a month, I'm doing a residency. There's only been me and Prince who have done it."

Ticket prices will start from £35 to help with the cost-of-living crisis, with tickets going on sale on Saturday at 10am.

"I'm doing this tour and literally two weeks after all the gas prices went up and petrol. I thought you've got to do something. I said why don't we do them at the same price.

"You've got to meet people halfway. It's why people need a laugh. That's why I was on the news. It's something happy for once. Not doom and gloom."

Peter, who has already bought 35 shirts for his new tour, said in a statement: "Audiences in London have always been amongst the best in Britain, plus I think seeing the show could be part of a nice weekend away treat.

"It’s good to get back to what I love doing best, stand-up comedy and if there’s ever a time people need a laugh it’s now”

"And with the cost of living at an all-time high, ticket prices are starting from £35. The same price they were on my previous tour in 2010".

Elsewhere in the interview, Peter said he "can't get his head around" the reaction after he announced a huge comeback tour at the weekend.

The comedian said he was blown over by the response as he steps into the spotlight for the first time in five years.

Peter, who has been practicing his new material in a few warm-up gigs, admitted he wanted to call the tour "Peter Who" due to his lengthy hiatus as he doubted fans would remember him after years out of the limelight.

He told Zoe: "I cannot get my head round it. I thought we should call this tour Peter Who. I hadn't been around for five years. I thought I'd be on the news when I'm dead not when I'm going on tour.

"I could not get over it, I was lying in bed with Susan. I had a show on Sunday night. Huw Edwards was on the news talking about me. I was like this is ridiculous.

"I thought it's going to be a slow news day, hasn't it. I couldn't believe I was on the main news on telly."

He later added: "Thank you everybody for the last few days. It's overwhelming. I hope I do a good show".

The comedian will be embarking on a UK-wide arena tour next month, as he takes his brand new stage show to a number of top venues. It will be the first time in 12 years that Peter has been on tour.

The new show was announced during the I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! ad break, with a hilarious clip of Peter carrying a roll of carpet and shouting to a man in a car.

The tour kicks off in Manchester and then will travel to Birmingham, Liverpool, Belfast, Newcastle, Dublin, Glasgow, Cardiff and Nottingham.

Peter was due to embark on a series of nationwide shows back in 2017 before cancelling due to unforeseen family circumstances.

When cancelling the 100-date sell-out tour, he released a statement which read: "Due to unforeseen family circumstances I deeply regret I am having to cancel all of my upcoming work projects.

"My sincerest apologies."

He added: "This decision has not been taken lightly and I’m sure you’ll understand my family must always come first."

Peter has stayed largely out of the spotlight ever since, although he has slowly started making a return to public life.

The Phoenix Nights star has made some surprise performances at small shows and charity events, recently delighting fans at the Dance For Life show for Cancer Research in Liverpool in August.

The charity dance-a-thon headed to the M&S Bank Arena, with Peter having entertained fans at the venue.

Following the show, many attendees took to social media to share their excitement at seeing the comedian live.

"Just had the best night of my life at [the show]. I can't even describe [it]. Three hours of non-stop dancing. Peter you have gone too long. Welcome back you legend," one person tweeted.

Another wrote: "Danced the night away with [Peter] and had a fantastic night." A third added: "Thank you for an amazing evening in Liverpool tonight. Best school disco ever".
