Peter Kay teases the return of Max and Paddy as he makes emotional comeback appearance

Peter Kay thrilled fans with his comeback to the stage after three years away - and he ramped up the excitement when he teased the return of one his shows.

The Phoenix Nights funnyman from Bolton delighted the audience during his matinee Q&A show at the Manchester Apollo when he didn't rule out the return of Max and Paddy's Road to Nowhere.

The sitcom, starring and written by Peter Kay and Paddy McGuinness, was a spin-off from Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights.

Broadcast on Channel Four, it ran for just one series from November to December 2004.

The series ran in 2004 (Channel 4)

The series followed the two Bolton doormen Maxwell 'Max' Bygraves (played by Peter) and Patrick 'Paddy' O'Shea (played by Paddy) as they toured around the UK in their campervan.

They were fugitives due to an incident in the last episodes of Phoenix Nights in which a club patron threatened to have them killed by hitmen.

Peter and Paddy sang the theme tune themselves.

Two Christmas specials were penned by the friends but they were never made.

Asked if TV series Max And Paddy would return Peter told the Apollo: "I loved making Max And Paddy, it was one of the best times we ever had filming and we had such a good laugh.

"We actually wrote two Christmas specials and then we never made them so you never know."

One fan who took to Twitter during the interval said: "First half of Peter Kay’s return absolutely hilarious.

"So good to see him back on stage (and he hasn’t ruled out more episodes of Max & Paddy!)."

Peter, 48, previously revealed that there wasn't the opportunity to make more Max and Paddy because of Paddy’s success hosting ITV’s Saturday night dating series Take Me Out.

The much-loved comedian has been out of the spotlight in recent years but has made a return to showbiz for two sell-out Q&A shows in aid of Laura Nuttall, 21, from Pendle in Lancashire, who is battling Glioblastoma, a grade four brain cancer.

Peter will be donating all profits from his two 'Doing It For Laura' shows - a matinee and evening performance - to Laura who is in the audience with her family.

Money from the events will go towards paying for life-saving treatment.

Both shows sold out in just 30 minutes when tickets went on sale.
