Peter Kay's new Car Share special is a surprise treat for Easter weekend

Fans of Peter Kay and his much-missed sitcom Car Share are in for a real treat this week with surprise news of a one-off return.

To launch the Easter weekend, when everyone is stuck at home at a time we normally would be celebrating with family and friends, the comedian is bringing us a special episode of BBC hit Car Share, the award-winning series which left viewers bereft when the last episode aired in 2018.

Now in a bid to cheer us up, Kay, who has been much out of the spotlight since cancelling a tour due to unforeseen family circumstances in 2017, will be making a return this Good Friday in a special episode of Car Share which will be available for free on the BBC iPlayer - as an audio download.

It means that fans can catch up once again with Kay's character John and pal Kayleigh, played by Sian Gibson; this time listening in to their conversation because filming it was out of the question during the current lockdown.

Kay said: “It’s a horrific situation right now we’re all going through and like so many I felt compelled to try and do something positive in an effort to cheer people in some way."

As the BBC announced the news the show, Kay told how it had come about during an online chat with his co-star and his co-writer, saying. “Sian Gibson, Paul Coleman and myself got together via t’internet and wrote a new short episode of Car Share in an effort to try cheer people up.

“It’s all happened very quickly, in fact it didn’t exist a week ago."

He added: “Obviously we weren’t able to film anything because of the lockdown but I hope people will use their imagination and enjoy listening.

“I’ve given the episode to the good people at BBC iPlayer and it’ll be available to listen from Good Friday.

"Here’s hoping people enjoy having John and Kayleigh back. Lord knows we need it right now.”

Fans will be only too keen to catch up with the typically hilarious journey-to-work banter between the characters who were initially brought together through their company's car share scheme.

They can listen in on their new story on BBC iPlayer on April 10 at 7pm.

Shane Allen, controller of BBC Comedy, said: "We can’t thank Peter enough for giving up his time and effort to make this extra special treat happen in donating some much-needed cheer to everybody for free.”
