Peter Kay's new Car Share episode pays special tribute to fan who died of coronavirus

Peter Kay has paid a touching tribute to a fan of his show Car Share who died of the coronavirus.

Car Share returned with a special audio-only episode released on iPlayer which came out on Friday.

It finished with a visual dedication to a man called Rob Daly, and a Twitter user explained the tribute.

She wrote: "For those wondering, Rob Daly was a massive Car Share fan, very active on twitter supporting the show and fellow fans.

"He sadly died from covid19 recently. Hugely special and thoughtful dedication from Peter, Sian and Paul [Coleman, a writer of the show.]"

Peter, 46, verified the statement by retweeting it after another user who was a fan of Car Share quote-tweeted it and said: "At the end of of the audio episode it shows a dedication to Rob Daly.

"This explains why."

Peter stepped back into the limelight in recent weeks and he has been welcomed back with open arms after going into hiding for two years.

He had dropped off the radar when he cancelled his tour due to "unforeseen family circumstances" in December 2017.

But in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, he gave up his time to film a short sitcom episode to entertain the nation while the UK remains in lockdown.

Peter championed cheering up the British nation during the "horrific situation".

He said: "It's a horrific situation right now we're all going through and like so many people I feel compelled to try to do something positive in an attempt to cheer people up in some way.

"Sian Gibson, Paul Coleman and myself got together via t'internet and wrote a new short episode of Car Share. It all happened very quickly - in fact, it didn't exist a week ago.

"Obviously we weren't able to film anything because of the lockdown but I hope people will use their imagination and enjoy listening."

Car Share charted the hilarious journey of John (Kay) and Kayleigh (Sian Gibson) after they were brought onto the same path in a company car share scheme.

Its pre-recorded last episode aired in May 2018, months after Peter said he was going to be retreating from the spotlight.
