Peter Kay's Car Share returns as comedian vows to cheer up fans amid coronavirus

Peter Kay's Car Share will return as the comedian expressed his hopes of cheering up fans amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The comedian, 46, has stepped back into the limelight in recent weeks and he has been welcomed back with open arms after going into hiding for two years.

Peter dropped off the radar when he cancelled his tour due to "unforeseen family circumstances" in December 2017.

But in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, he has given up his time to film a short sitcom episode to entertain the nation while the UK remains in lockdown.

The one-off special will be available for audio download on Friday.

Peter championed cheering up the British nation during the "horrific situation".

He said: "It's a horrific situation right now we're all going through and like so many people I feel compelled to try to do something positive in an attempt to cheer people up in some way.

"Sian Gibson, Paul Coleman and myself got together via t'internet and wrote a new short episode of Car Share. It all happened very quickly - in fact, it didn't exist a week ago.

"Obviously we weren't able to film anything because of the lockdown but I hope people will use their imagination and enjoy listening."

Car Share charted the hilarious journey of John (Kay) and Kayleigh (Sian Gibson) after they were brought onto the same path in a company car share scheme.

Its pre-recorded last episode aired in May 2018, months after Peter said he was going to be retreating from the spotlight.

Peter got heaps of praise for putting in the effort to bring the episode to life.

Shane Allen, the controller of BBC Comedy, said: "We can't thank Peter enough for giving up his time and effort to make this extra-special treat happen."

Peter had planned to make his return with fundraisers that were cancelled after the COVID-19 outbreak swept the globe.

The funnyman will return to TV for the first time in BBC's live three-hour special on April 23.

BBC's Big Night In will raise money for Children in Need and Comic Relief.
