Peter Kay breaks social media silence to blast 'misleading' Channel 5 documentary

Peter Kay has broken his social media silence to slam a Channel 5 documentary which aired last night.

The synopsis of the two-hour show says it is "a celebration of the life and career of the comedian, featuring interviews with the man himself as well as friends and colleagues Pete Waterman, Jenny Powell and Bobby Davro.

"This film charts the comic's rise from the back streets of Bolton to performing record-breaking arena tours and also included are some classic comedy routines, along with some rare gems and clips from hit TV series Phoenix Nights and Car Share," it continues.

But the comedian took to Twitter yesterday to denounce Channel 5's Peter Kay Comedy Genius: In His Own Words documentary, the Liverpool Echo reports

He said: "Very flattering of Channel 5 to commission the programme going out tonight, but just to let people known that 'Peter Kay: In His Own Words' has an incredibly misleading title, as it doesn't feature any new interviews with Peter and all the footage is completely historic.

"The title also gives the impression that Peter has been involved in the making of this documentary, which he hasn't. At all."

The tweet is written in third person, so it's unclear whether Peter or a member of his management team posted it.

This is the first time in the three months that a post has been tweeted from Peter's account.

In October a tweet informing fans about Phoenix Nights being shown at a cinema in Blackpool in aid of Cancer Research was posted.

Channel 5 declined to comment.

Back in December 2017, the Manchester native cancelled his work commitments. At the time he said: "Due to unforeseen family circumstances, I deeply regret that I am having to cancel all my upcoming shows.

"This unfortunately means includes my upcoming stand-up tour, Dance for Life shows and any outstanding work commitments.

"My sincerest apologies. This decision has not been taken lightly and I'm sure you'll understand my family must always come first.

"I've always endeavored to protect my family's privacy from the media.

"I hope that the media and the public will continue to respect our privacy at this time. Once again I'm very sorry."
