Peter Kay breaks silence to denounce 'incredibly misleading' Channel 5 documentary

Peter Kay has broken his social media silence to denounce a Channel 5 documentary about his comedy career.

The comedian took exception to the title of the show – Peter Kay: In His Own Words – because he believes it suggests he was involved in making it.

In fact, the one-hour show is compiled of archive footage showing his live routines and interviews he has given over the past few decades.

Seemingly at the comedian’s request, Kay’s official social media page wrote: ”Very flattering of Channel 5 to commission the programme going out tonight, but just to let people know that Peter Kay: In His Own Words has an incredibly misleading title, as it doesn’t feature any new interviews with Peter and all the footage is completely historic.”

It continued: “The title gives the impression that Peter has been involved in the making of this documentary, which he hasn’t. At all.”

The tweet arrived shortly before Kay was photographed attending the final performance of Nativity! The Musical in London.

Debbie Isitt, the show’s director, wrote: “So lovely to see brilliant comic genius Peter Kay and his lovely family @nativityuk tonight for our final show! What a lovely surprise for us all.”

It has been a quiet year for Kay, 46, whose last professional appearance was at a screening of his BBC sitcom Car Share in April 2018.

In December 2017, he cancelled his tour for personal reasons.
