The comedian said: "I want to say thanks to everyone who has bought tickets so far, and we've finally managed to book some more extra dates. He also added that the tour experience so far has been "joyous".

When he called in he joked "I put a pound in the pay phone, let's keep it brief", and told the presenter about his first gig experience. He also spoke about a gig he went to on his own at the Apollo last month to see Squeeze where he worse his Covid mask as disguise.

The comedian teased a 'big announcement' on social media last night, while also issuing a heartwarming message to his fans. Writing on Twitter on Wednesday night, Kay said: "I'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who came to the first shows in Manchester. It was incredible to be a part of such a happy experience.

"Everybody deserves a bit of joy. Here's to a lot more in the shows to come!! P.S. big announcement Thursday on Sara Cox Drivetime Show just after 6pm." Fans were on tenterhooks having to wait for the big announcement with some hoping the comedian was planning on bringing back Phoenix Nights, while others hoped it would be his popular Car Share tv show.

He embarked on the first date of his first solo tour in 12 years at the Manchester AO Arena on Friday night in front of a sell-out crowd of fans. The show was met with incredible praise and scored five stars out of five from the M.E.N.

Stepping on stage at the Arena, the star received a huge standing ovation from fans which left him in tears. The mammoth tour will see him perform at 110 shows in total across the country over the span of 2022, 2023, 2024, and well into 2025.

After announcing the tour a month ago he said: "It’s good to get back to what I love doing best, stand-up comedy, and if there’s ever a time people need a laugh it’s now."
