Peter Jackson says he found Lord of the Rings trilogy ‘inconsistent’ after rewatching it

Peter Jackson has admitted to finding his Lord of the Rings trilogy “inconsistent” after watching it back.

After the director revisited the films, he noticed how every instalment looked so different due to the advancement of technology with every new film.

Jackson was so irked by the change in colour grading across all three films that it inspired him to remaster the hit franchise.

“It was interesting going back and revisiting these films, because I realised how inconsistent they were, and that’s really due to the way in which The Lord of the Rings trilogy was shot first, about 20 years ago,” he said in a new video interview released ahead of the remasters.

Speaking about his ability to fix the films, which were released between 2001 and 2003, Jackson said: “It’s fun having all the toys now – we didn’t have all this stuff to play with in the old days.”

Jackson even used the opportunity to remaster his Hobbit trilogy, which was released between 2012 and 2014.

Consequently, all six of the director’s films – from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring to The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies – now “feel like one big film telling the same story, looking and sounding the same”.

Jackson said he was “pleased” with the result, adding: “It feels in many respects that I finally reached the end of the journey and finished it at last”.

The Middle Earth series is now available on 4K Ultra HD on Blu-Ray and Digital via Warner Bros Home Entertainment.
