Peter Haring insists Austria v Scotland is a must win for under fire hosts after Israel humbling

Callum McGregor might not see Austria as a must win game for Scotland.

But Peter Haring insists it very much is for the hosts after their 5-2 humbling against Israel at the weekend.

The Scots are in Vienna ahead of their latest World Cup qualifier and are one point ahead of their opponents in third place.

Celtic skipper McGregor claimed earlier that it was more of a “must not lose” that a must-win for Steve Clarke’s men.

But Hearts midfielder Haring is adamant only one outcome will suffice back home after they came under heavy fire for the loss in Israel.

“It’s a huge game for both teams but in Austria, it’s more seen as a must win to get second spot in the group,” he said.

“The mood was very much one of disappointment after the heavy defeat in Israel on Saturday. The team definitely expected to go there and pick up three points.

“There’s been huge criticism of the team after their performance and especially towards the coach as well.

“On Tuesday they’ll try to show everyone they’re better than the performance showed on Saturday. They’ll start on the front foot and try to dominate the game.”

Like Scotland, Austria haven’t reached a World Cup since France 98.

Their appearance at the Euros was the first tournament finals they’d qualified for since, having automatically been awarded a place at Euro 2008 and co-hosts with Switzerland.

So Haring knows this means just as much to Austria as a nation and their long term hopes of becoming tournament regulars as it does to the visitors.

He added: “We’re very similar.," he told BBC Scotland. "With the Euros it was the first big tournament we’d qualified for since France 98, the same as Scotland. The only difference was the Euros in Austria in 2008.

“As an Austrian player, it’s a once in a lifetime moment if you can go to a World Cup so it would be a huge achievement to be part of that tournament.”
