Peter Green Chilled cyber attack: Major supermarket distributor to Tesco and Sainsbury's 'held to ransom'

A major distributor to Britain’s biggest supermarkets, including Tesco, Sainsbury's and Aldi, is being held to ransom by cyber hackers following a string of assaults on UK retail in the last month.

Peter Green Chilled said clients were "receiving regular updates" including "workarounds" on how to continue deliveries.

No orders would be processed on Thursday, although any order prepared on Wednesday would be sent, the Somerset-based logistics firm said.

It comes just weeks after retailers such as Marks & Spencer and the Co-operative were hit by major cyber attacks.

In an email sent last Thursday, the Somerset-based logistics firm said it had been the victim of a ransomware attack — a type of malware that encrypts a victim's data or locks their devices, demanding a ransom payment to regain access.

Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones, founder of The Black Farmer, is one supplier affected and revealed he had “something like ten pallets worth of meat products” with Peter Green Chilled.

He said the products will be “thrown in the bin” if they are not delivered to retailers.

“Thousands and thousands of packs of products, sitting there, and the clock is ticking," Mr Emmanuel-Jones said. "There's no information. Everything along the chain has to be stopped, and then there are thousands of pounds worth of product that are just wasting away."

Peter Green Chilled confirmed to the BBC the cyber attack occured last Wednesday, but it said it was not in a position to discuss further.

"The transport activities of the business have continued unaffected throughout this incident," managing director Tom Binks said.

Phil Pluck, chief executive of the Cold Chain Federation, said warehousing, food storage and distribution sectors are "constantly under attack".

M&S recently admitted that customer data was stolen and operations disrupted when it was hacked in April.

Meanwhile, the Co-op said it narrowly avoided being locked out of their systems entirely when it was targeted earlier this month.
