Dutton’s comments reference comments made by the former Greens leader on Thursday, and stated that people in Melbourne/Naarm “hate” Dutton.

Bandt addressed the media and spoke about his recent loss on Thursday.

“To win in Melbourne, we needed to overcome Liberal, One Nation and Labor combined — it’s an Everest we’ve climbed a few times now, but this time we fell just short,” he said, per SBS.

“People in Melbourne hate Peter Dutton with a very good reason.

“They have seen his brand of toxic racism on display for many years, seen his time as immigration minister, seen him make comments about Melbourne…many of them wanted him as far away from power as possible.”

Both the defeat of Bandt and Dutton have left the Greens Party and the Coalition, respectively, without a leader.

The Greens are still expected to hold the balance of power in the Senate, although it is projected to lose at least three of four of its lower house seats. Potential leaders include Sarah Hanson-Young and Mehreen Faruqi.

The Liberal Party will hold a ballot on the election of a new leader on Tuesday. Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price has announced her candidacy for deputy party leader, after she stepped down from the Nationals, and endorsed Angus Taylor as the party’s leader.
